Piranesi

Carceri

Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s series of labyrinthine prison interiors, the Carceri, has been fascinating and disturbing viewers for more than 250 years. These outstanding, large-format etchings of imaginary architectures extend the boundaries of the viewing experience and continue to have relevance to audiences in the 21st century as an expression of existential fear.
